President Ranil went to England on Sep 17th to attend the funeral ceremony of Queen Elizabeth. Along with Ranil, eight others joined the trip. The visit, which was carried out while there was a famine in the country, drew much criticism.
During the visit, Ranil attended an investment promotion meeting, which was mare done to avoid criticism. Said meeting was organized by the UK Embassy of Sri Lanka. The investment promotion session was a total failure. This was a gathering limited only to Sinhalese, Tamils, and Muslims in London. Almost all the invited Muslims and Tamis boycotted the meeting.
Ranil could not have a bilateral discussion with anyone from the British government or any country. Ranil was unable to do anything at least to soften the warnings imposed by various countries regarding investment in Sri Lanka. Ranil’s meeting was simply a miserable gathering of embassy henchmen.
Only Nimalan Viswanathan, who appears to be a leader of the Tamil diaspora, supported Ranil’s meeting. As an explanation, They said that Muslims and Tamils boycotted the meeting for 2 main reasons
1. Failure to amend the Terrorism Act.(PTA)
2. Kamal Gunaratne and Shavendra, who are accused of war crimes, occupying high positions in the government
Nevertheless, National Alert learned that the reason why the Tamil and Muslim communities in London boycotted Ranil’s meeting was more serious than that. As usual, for the meeting invitations were sent by the Sri Lankan Embassy in London. Reportedly a Lady employee in the embassy leaked the guest list to the TCC organization. The TCC activists then called on Tamils and Muslims to boycott the meeting .
TCC otherwise World Tamil Coordinating Committee was a banned organization. But Kamal Gunaratne himself removed the ban by issuing a gazette on the 1st of August 2022
Ranil’s visit to London did not fetch even a dollar of foreign investment. But because of the lessons, Ranil learned in London, Kamal Gunaratne and Shavendra are more likely to be removed.
It is worth noting, Shavendra and Kamal Gunaratne are currently being heavily criticized by Gotabhaya. Upon dismissal, Kamal Gunaratne will lose not only his job but also his image. Kamal Gunaratne is going home as a traitor to his soul, to his beloved leader, and to the country
